Is green power generation for datacenters really Green?

Carbon offset trading, clean power production etc are all used (or proposed) as alternative ways to be "green" in the way we implement data centers. Is it reasonable though? Inefficient power usage offset by the production of green (low impact) electricity is clearly less impactful than a net reduction in power consumption, by for example the reduction in PUE through cooling efficiency gains. Reducing the carbon footprint by mean of production and reduction must damage the environment more than simply reduction in carbon dioxide production, right?

I agree, and have been arguing this point with Carbon-offset fanatics for a while.

This is what was so disingenuous about Al Gore's response to the revelation that his home in TN was using over $1000 in electrical power a month...that this was okay because he's purchasing carbon offsets. Purchasing carbon offest doesn't reduce carbon, using less fossil-fuel generated power does.
