Web search and kids

E just learned that Googling bad words shows bad pictures... any recomendations on helping to protect her on the internet? Net Nanny seems like a highly rated product.

Open DNS provides some free category based filtering. It is not perfect but it is painless to set up and actually makes your DNS resolution quicker in the process.

Net Nanny is real nice, it doesn't even allow the children to change the filter off of strict. It keeps a nice log of attempts to go to restricted pages too.

I have a 13 y.o. boy so seeing a log is a must. Probably not necessary if you are just trying to protect them from the accidental adult searching.

Oh and it is configurable to block more than adult content, if I recall it had things like religion and other things I can't recall off the top of my head.

I definetly felt better letting him use the computer without supervision with NetNanny installed.

Chris, who's a friend of a friend (of yours) had a similar problem several years ago. http://www.sellsbrothers.com/news/showtopic.aspx?ixtopic=1830. One of the comments links to this article (http://heathersolomon.com/blog/articles/542.aspx) which reiterates one of the most important things I've heard - put the computer in a high traffic area (we've moved the general use laptop to the kitchen).

Thanks for the link, that is indeed good advice.
